Duration and Depth of Snow Cover
The following data was taken from the Duration and Depth
of Snow Cover report, published by the University of Minnesota. The
figures are from the statistics of the Gunflint Trail weather reporting
station, located approximately 8 miles from Grand Marias, MN. which is
very near Hungry Jack Lodge & Campground. The report is dated 1982 and
represents statistics covering 20 seasons from 1959 to 1979. Though the
data is somewhat old, it is the most current data that we have been able
to find.
The above mentioned report states that the Gunflint Trail weather
reporting station, on the average, "has the longest season of snow cover
days of any (Minnesota weather) station". The report also says that the
Gunflint station is in the "heaviest snow area of the state".
AVERAGE SEASONAL SNOW COVER DAYS
Snow depth Number of days
6" 160 days
12" 150 days
24" 100 days
Per the report: "no first or last date of snow cover observations were made at
the site. However, an estimate of the first date of 1" snow cover is November
1st and the estimated last date in spring is May 5th.
