It's winter here at Hungry Jack Lodge and Campground and we have switched into our full winter mode. Things here at Hungry Jack Lodge don't come to a standstill during the winter. We just do a whole lot of things now, that we don't do during the summer months. No more canoeing or boats. Now it's all about snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, alpine skiing and various other winter sports.  To see winter and snowmobiling photos be sure to visit our Photo Galleries page.

It's not just the activities that change during the winter. We also have reduced rates on our cabins for the winter months and our kitchen serves burgers, fries, etc, in addition to our full service breakfast and dinner menus. Our cabins, rustic main lodge, kitchen, game room, Logger's lounge and sauna are all open.

Whether on the trail or utilizing our accommodations, our restaurant is a must stop. Open daily and featuring delicious home cooked meals. Breakfast and dinner by reservation. Short order menu served daily from 10:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Free trailer parking for Non-Guests.

snowmobiling

There are well over 350 miles of groomed snowmobile and ski trails in the Hungry Jack Lodge and Gunflint Trail area available for your riding and skiing enjoyment. Hungry Jack Lodge & Campground is right on one of the groomed trails. Groomed trails come right across Hungry Jack Lake to our Logger's Lounge entrance.

Trials are usually groomed twice a week by various snowmobile clubs in the area and the U.S. Forest Service. The snowmobile routes include the Canadian Border on Lake Saganaga, Grand Portage, and are connected to North Shore Trails. It's a little known fact, but, the Gunflint Trail area is one of the best areas in the mid-west for snowmobiling.

24/7 fueal service with our automated credit card enabled fuel pumNeed to get fuel? New in 2006 is our 24/7 credit card and cash fuel pump.  No more waiting for someone to come out of the Lodge to pump gas.  Our new credit card enabled fuel pump saves both you and our staff time. You'll find this new fuel pump especially convenient when our staff is busy with other chores and you want to get on your way.  We sell only premium unleaded gas (91 octane).

Need fuel for your body? Try one of our delicious burgers and fries and wash it down with your favorite beverage in our Logger's Lounge. We even rent snowmobiles.  If you've never gone on a "sled" and want to try it come on up and rent one. Or, if someone in your group of friends doesn't have a snowmobile, bring them along with you and they can rent one, and ride with you.

We offer free trailer parking for non-guests. So, if you live close by or are just coming up for the day to snowmobile you don't have to park in town.

SNOW DATA

Weekly Snow Depth and Snow Depth Ranking Maps

To view Snow Depth and Snow Depth Ranking maps compiled by the University of Minnesota since the 2002-2003 winter seasons go to:  http://climate.umn.edu/doc/snowmap.htm  These maps are compiled on a weekly basis.  We found them interesting & informative and think that you will too.

Duration and Depth of Snow Cover

The following data was taken from the Duration and Depth of Snow Cover report, published by the University of Minnesota. The figures are from the statistics of the Gunflint Trail weather reporting station, located approximately 8 miles from Grand Marias, MN. which is very near Hungry Jack Lodge & Campground. The report is dated 1982 and represents statistics covering 20 seasons from 1959 to 1979. Though the data is somewhat old, it is the most current data that we have been able to find.

The above mentioned report states that the Gunflint Trail weather reporting station, on the average, "has the longest season of snow cover days of any (Minnesota weather) station". The report also says that the Gunflint station is in the "heaviest snow area of the state".

AVERAGE SEASONAL SNOW COVER DAYS
Snow depth Number of days
6"                     160 days
12"                   150 days
24"                   100 days

Per the report: "no first or last date of snow cover observations were made at the site. However, an estimate of the first date of 1" snow cover is November 1st and the estimated last date in spring is May 5th.

For people that thrive on statistics, the full report mentioned above can be found at:  http://climate.umn.edu/pdf/climate_of_minnesota/comXIII.pdf
